چکیده

The legislations have been promulgated in many states that remove barriers to large-scale beneficial re-use of waste materials. As a result, there is a renewed emphasis on incorporating suitable waste products into highway construction. Fly ash is one of these materials, and is increasingly being used as fill materials for highway embankments, and as grout mixes for road bases. In most cases, a geotextile is in contact with the fly ash or fly ash-treated soil, and drainage is one of the duties expected from the geotextile. Hydraulic compatibility of geotextile drains with fly ash was evaluated through laboratory gradient ratio tests. The results indicate that fly ash is compatible with a variety of woven and nonwoven geotextiles. Clogging of the geotextile or excessive piping of fly ash was not observed, even under relatively high hydraulic gradients. The gradient ratio test had some limitations when used with fly ash. Long-term tests should be performed for evaluating the performance of the fly ash-geotextile systems, and changes in hydraulic conductivity should be analyzed along with the measured gradient ratios.

Retention performance of geotextile containers confining geomaterials

The design of geotextile containers for dewatering applications typically requires hydraulic compatibility between the geotextile and the confined fill material. Ideally, a geotextile container must successfully retain the solid phase of the fill material and must not be clogged during the dewatering process. This becomes difficult to achieve when the fill material is fine grained and the pore ...

Dewatering Fly Ash Slurries Using Geotextile Containers

The design of geotextile containers for dewatering applications typically requires good retention of the confined fill material solids. This becomes difficult to achieve when the fill material is fine grained and the pore openings are large. Furthermore, the proper retention becomes critical if the confined material is contaminated. Fly ash is one of the fine-grained geomaterials that exhibit b...

Filtration Performance of Two-Layer Geotextile Systems

Nonwoven geotextiles are commonly used in filtration applications. For some applications, however, a nonwoven geotextile filter may not have the required mechanical properties to withstand deformations, and an additional woven geotextile is usually employed in design. While reinforcement is an important function expected from these two-layer geotextile systems, filtration is another function th...

Ac ce pte d M an us cri pt No t C op ye dit ed 1 Feasibility of Using Coal Fly Ash for Mine Waste Containment

This study investigates the feasibility of using coal fly ash and fly ash-bentonite mixtures as a barrier material for mine waste. The hydraulic conductivity of the coal fly ash was measured to be in the order of 2 x 10 -9 m/s when it was permeated with deionized water, and this value decreased significantly when the permeant was switched to acid mine drainage (AMD). Addition of bentonite to co...

Experimental Studies on Treated Sub-base Soil with Fly Ash and Cement for Sustainable Design Recommendations

The pavement constructions on soft and expansive soils are not durable and unable to sustain heavy traffic loading. As a result, pavement failures and settlement problems will occur very often even under light traffic loading due to cyclic and rolling effects. Geotechnical engineers have dwelled deeply into this matter, and adopt various methods to improve the engineering characteristics of sof...
